One hot summer quite a long time ago

Whilst wandering in areas not recommended for gentlewomen during a picnic excursion 
to a sleepy hamlet on the Carquinez Strait, California.
They happened upon a thing, that can be best described as a charm of great mystery.
Never ones to leave a story untold, our intrepid adventuresses, 
lacking somewhat in compunction 
decided they simply must 
"poke around a bit"
